Social Security disability benefits are available to individuals who are unable to work any type of job for a period of 12 consecutive months or more, due to an illness, injury, or disability. They are also available to individuals who have impairments that would result in death in less than 12 months. Benefits are available for people who suffer from mental and physical impairments, or some combination of the two.
Benefits can be broken down into two categories:
- Disability Insurance Benefits (DIB): In order to be eligible for DIB, you must have enough work experience so that you have sufficiently paid Social Security taxes. We can take a look at your work experience and help you determine whether or not you are eligible.
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI): These benefits are available to people who have not worked or not worked enough recently. Age and education are also factors in determining an individual's eligibility.
