Social Security disability benefits are available to individuals who are unable to work any type of job for a period of 12 consecutive months or more, due to an illness, injury, or disability. They are also available to individuals who have impairments that would result in death in less than 12 months. Benefits are available for people who suffer from mental and physical impairments, or some combination of the two.

Benefits can be broken down into two categories:

  • Disability Insurance Benefits (DIB): In order to be eligible for DIB, you must have enough work experience so that you have sufficiently paid Social Security taxes. We can take a look at your work experience and help you determine whether or not you are eligible.
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI): These benefits are available to people who have not worked or not worked enough recently. Age and education are also factors in determining an individual's eligibility.

What Do You Need to Prove?

Social security disability law can be complicated, but we can help you through the process. While determination is heavily based on medical records and past work history, your financial status will play an important role as well. It is important that you prepare your application or appeal as thoroughly as possible, so the Administration will have all of the information regarding your financial status and your condition. Qualifying disabilities can include:

  • Cardiovascular problems
  • Orthopedic conditions
  • Blindness
  • Deafness
  • Neurological problems
  • Breathing and pulmonary problems
  • Depression, anxiety or other mental illnesses
  • Immunity problems
  • Any other physical or mental impairments, or combination of them, that prevent consistent working
